B84 LS was built specially Commissioned under the instruction of Scottish Sportsman Captain Douglas Krauss, a prominent and political gentleman in 1937 and was 1st. registered in the UK in May of 1938 , as ELB3. It was initially tested and documented by AutoCar Magazine as a âone offâ special bodied Van-Den-Plas drop head Coupe .When the War ended in 1945, B84LS was shipped to Australia via the second owner, a sister of the two other Directors of Penguin Books of London, after the Company was sold. The Lady found the car too large at her new home in Sydney NSW. This beauty is a prime investment opportunity, and probably THE finest driving pre-war vintage car in the world today. Absolute show quality.
She sold B84LS to Mr. Kenneth Hoskins a prominent business man and client of Ross Marshall of Marshall Motors, Australia'sâ oldest, largest and most experienced Mercedes Benz dealer's. Hoskins carried out significant service through Rolls Royce in Sydney who fitted power steering at the direction of the RR Factory in the UK.
In 1965, on a promise from Mr. Hoskins, Marshall took the car on trade, and immediately began improving the car, adding to his unique and classic automobile collection. 1984, contemplating a later move to the USA, he shipped B84LS together with his 1914 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost to California, where it was placed in his storage garage...
In 1986 Marshall moved to the US and settled in Atlanta where he continued to treasure and pamper his favorite car. The engine was pulled down in early 1991, cleaned the water jackets the interior of the engine, which required no replacement work at all. The body was completely dismantled, plastic pebble blasted back to the original aluminum, then completely repainted in Mercedes Benz color Magnetite blue. At the same time all the chrome was replated in Nashville, and the car re upholstered in Connelly hide, with English carpeting and separate lambs wool rugs and German cloth top. New tires were fitted and the spokes replaced with stainless steel and polished. Later an original luggage rack and trunk was added to enhance the cars featuresâŠ.. This car is perfect, we think !
This past year two examples of special bodied Bentleyâs have graced the auction block here in the USA , and found new owners after considerable long term ownership.
A Derby â38 fixed head coupe sold for $1.7 + million, and a â48 drop head coupe $1.76 + million. Both cars were comparable with B84LS.
There have been other examples as well !
